Here Are the 8 Real Causes

You click the button, the level meter stays flat, and nobody can hear you. Your microphone is not working in the browser — and the error message, if there is one at all, tells you nothing useful.

The good news: this problem does not have dozens of causes. It has eight, they are always the same eight, and each takes seconds to fix once you know which one you have. Here is how to eliminate them in order, from the most common to the sneakiest.

1. Permission was denied once, a long time ago

This is the number one cause by a wide margin. A browser asks for microphone permission once per site. If you clicked « Block » — or dismissed the popup without answering — it remembers and never asks again. The site has no way to tell you; all you get is silence.

Look for the padlock (or sliders icon) to the left of the address bar, open it, and set the microphone back to « Allow » or « Ask ». Then reload the page: without a reload, the change does not take effect.

On phones the same icon sits in the same place. On iPhone it is sometimes tucked behind the « aA » button.

2. The page is not on HTTPS

Browsers flatly refuse microphone access on
http://
pages. This is not a setting you can change — it is a security rule, because without encryption anyone on the network could listen in. If the address does not start with https, no amount of tweaking will help. Nothing is wrong on your side; the site needs to move to HTTPS.

3. The wrong microphone is selected

A typical computer has three or four audio inputs: the built-in mic, the webcam’s mic, the headset, and often a virtual input left behind by software you installed years ago. The browser uses whichever one the system hands it — not necessarily the one you are talking into.

On Windows, right-click the sound icon, open Sound settings, and look at the Input section: it shows the active device and a bar that moves when you speak. If the bar stays still, switch devices. On macOS it is System Settings > Sound > Input.

4. Another app is holding the microphone hostage

On Windows, some applications take the mic in exclusive mode: while they are running, nothing else can have it. The usual suspects are Teams, Zoom, Discord, OBS and any meeting app left running in the background.

Close them properly — not just the window, but the icon in the system tray near the clock. Then reload the page.

5. The operating system is blocking it for everything

Above the browser sits the operating system, with its own permission layer. If that is switched off, the browser will not even see that a microphone exists.

On Windows: Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone. Two switches matter — the master toggle, and the separate one for desktop apps further down the page, which almost everyone misses. On macOS: System Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone, where your browser must be ticked.

6. Your Bluetooth headset is in the wrong mode

This one catches everybody. A Bluetooth headset runs in two mutually exclusive modes: a listening mode with good audio quality and no microphone, and a call mode that enables the mic but noticeably degrades the sound.

If you were listening to music just before, the headset is still in listening mode and its microphone simply does not exist as far as the browser is concerned. Stop the music, explicitly select the headset as the input device, and give the system two or three seconds to switch. The audio will get duller — that is how you know it worked.

7. On a phone, the app moved to the background

Since Android 10, an app that is no longer in the foreground loses microphone access. Open your maps, your messages or the camera while talking and you stop being heard — even though you can still hear everyone else.

This is not a bug, it is a safeguard: nobody wants a live microphone while they check something else. Switch back to the tab and start talking again. If audio does not resume by itself, reload the page.

8. Something, somewhere, is simply muted

Before dismantling your system settings, check the three obvious things that waste the most time: the physical switch on the headset cable, the mute key on your keyboard, and the site’s own mute button. Gaming headsets often have a flip-up boom mic that mutes when you raise it.

How to find the culprit in ten seconds

One check saves you from trying everything at random. Open your system’s input level meter and talk.

The bar moves: hardware and system are fine. The problem is inside the browser — so causes 1, 2, 3 or 4.

The bar does not move: the browser is innocent. The problem is hardware or system — so causes 3, 5, 6 or 8.

That single test halves the list and spares you four pointless fixes.

If nothing works

Try the same page in a different browser. If the mic works there, the issue is a permission or an extension in the first one — ad blockers and privacy extensions sometimes cut off device access. If it fails everywhere, the browser is not the problem; look at the system or the hardware.

One last habit worth having: restart the browser completely, not just the tab. A device plugged in or unplugged while the browser was running is sometimes only detected on a fresh start.

Frequently asked questions

Why won’t the browser ask me for permission again?

Because it remembered your first answer. You have to change it yourself through the padlock to the left of the address bar, then reload.

Do I need to install anything to use my mic on a website?

No. Any modern browser handles microphones natively. No plugin, no extra software.

My mic works on one site but not another

Permissions are granted per site. One site being allowed says nothing about the next. Check the padlock on the one that is failing.

My microphone cuts out after a few minutes

Look at power management first: a computer that suspends its devices will drop the mic without warning. On a phone, see cause 7.

Test it right now

The quickest check is to try.
